Aguada, Puerto Rico — Destination Overview
Aguada is a coastal municipality located in the northwestern region of Puerto Rico, within the tourism zone known as “Porta del Sol”. It has a population of around 38,136 residents.
Its name originates from the historical practice of sailors who stopped along its shores to “make aguada”, meaning to replenish their fresh water supply.
Aguada is also known as the “City of Discovery”, since many believe that Christopher Columbus stopped there during his second voyage to the Americas.
One of Aguada’s most notable heritage sites is the Parroquia Santuario Protomártires Inmaculada Concepción, which contains the ruins of a 16th-century Franciscan hermitage known as Ermita del Espinar, recognized as one of the oldest religious structures in Puerto Rico.
The municipality is home to a vibrant cultural life, including patron saint festivals, artisan fairs, beach events, and other community celebrations throughout the year.
